In 1943, Arthur "Pete" Hilton was assigned to ground crew at Sheppard Field in Wichita Falls, Texas. He then attended army technical school in Sioux Falls, South Dakota as radio operator/radio mechanic. In April of 1944, he graduated with the rank of corporal and was transferred to Barksdale Field in Shreveport, Louisiana where he was trained on B-26 Marauders as a radio gunner.
